What is At Peace Music?
For commercial purposes, our kind of music is usually categorized as “relaxation” or “new age” music, yet there are no simple labels to describe the uplifting, liberating and ultimately life-enhancing effect our music has had on thousands of people. Medical experts and music therapists are still searching for valid ways to “quantify” the therapeutic effects of relaxation music on listeners, particularly people in need of stress-relief and healing. Yes, there is “new age” music out there that makes grandiose claims, something we prefer not to do. Like any performing or visual art, how music moves or influences you is a personal experience and not one for us to dictate.
Much New Age, Relaxation and Healing music is created using synthesizers and electronic studio equipment. Our musicians, most of whom are classically trained, prefer to:
• Use acoustic instruments and record their music in live sessions with multiple musicians
• Draw inspiration from classical western as well as ancient eastern musical traditions to create peaceful, harmonic melodies that encourage an alert yet relaxed mindfulness, not boredom.
• Compose long musical tracks with no jarring tempo changes or musical interruptions

What is At Peace Music used for?
Our acoustic, instrumental music is specifically designed to promote an open, relaxed state of mind and to assist people using music as a catalyst to tap into, recover or discover a more inwardly focused state leading to THETA, a frequency range on the border between sleep and wakefulness that is associated with profound levels of relaxation.

However, we can say that based on what our customers tell us, At Peace music does enhance “right brain” activities such as meditation, guided imagery and creative visualizations. We think our music rejuvenates your ability to fully realize intuitive, emotional and creative impulses – which is why people often refer to our music as “comfort music’".
Is At Peace Music the work of a single musician or composer?
No, unlike some relaxation, new age or healing music labels that exist to promote the musical talent of a single musician, we are not musicians looking to promote or package our own musical skills. Our goal is to work directly with a variety of musicians who we feel are uniquely qualified to create relaxing, healing music for our customers.
At Peace music is not really "world" music either. World music has a jazzier beat, more tempo changes and complex musical juxtapositions. Unlike "world" music, which is great for driving, or aerobic exercise, or during social activities, our music is designed for use during yoga, meditation, massage and bodywork, tai-chi, reiki or musical therapy.
Over the past five years, we have received many testimonial letters and reviews from medical professionals, massage and bodywork professionals, and others who help people cope with disease, depression or the pressures and stresses of everyday life, sharing with us how our At Peace music enables them to work more effectively to achieve these goals of stress-reduction, relaxation, meditation and healing.
How is At Peace Music different?
Composing music for relaxation, meditation, yoga and bodywork is not as simple as it sounds. The analogy we usually make is to abstract expressionist art, about which people love to say, "looks like something any five year old could paint" but how many people could actually duplicate a Jackson Pollock or Mark Rothko with any degree of success? Like abstract art, there is a lot of relaxation and new age music. Music that is beautifully packaged as relaxing or therapeutic without the structure or interest to hold your attention for any period of time does not ultimately help produce the profoundly relaxed and rejuvenated THETA brain waves.
At Peace music is composed, arranged and performed by trained musicians, including sound healers such as Ruth Cunningham, formerly of the acclaimed womens' vocal quartet Anonymous 4 and others whose goal is often to create music that will open minds and hearts, awaken spirits and tap into a mindfulness of "something greater than ourselves.
As you can see from our customer testimonials, and reviews of our music from such experts as Don Campbell, author of The Mozart Effect and Pat Moffitt Cook, director of the Open Ear Institute, our musicians have created music for At Peace music that really works for people who want music that is peaceful yet refreshing, relaxing but not boring, and evocative but not
too busy.
At Peace music is often described as having a spiritual dimension, and a sense of infinite space yet at the same time makes the listener feel safe. One of our composers, Stephen Cohn really puts it best when he says, "there really are no formulas for creating something that's relaxing. As a composer, I look for a place inside, where, in writing something, I actually feel the experience of letting go and relaxing or of opening to a space that's beyond thought. Maybe it's a question of identifying that place in oneself creatively and then expressing it musically."
