Snoring: When Over-The-Counter Products Don’t Work

by Nod on 11/07/2012

An article released by the American Medical News informed the public that Medicare will now cover sleep testing for the diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea. If you’re a snorer, pay attention. Chronic snoring is a strong indicator of sleep apnea, which is most commonly diagnosed by a sleep study. Many people struggle to find a solution to their snoring by trying over-the-counter drugs with little success. Fortunately, those who qualify for Medicare can now take the next step without worrying about how to finance the expensive study.

Why did Medicare and Medicaid include this in their list of covered procedures? “Medicare beneficiaries who have obstructive sleep apnea face significant risks for cardiovascular disease and other ailments,” said CMS Acting Administrator Charlene Frizzera. “This coverage decision establishes nationally consistent coverage and assures that beneficiaries who have sleep apnea can be appropriately diagnosed and referred for treatment.”

Obstructive sleep apnea is a disorder in which breathing is briefly (about 10 seconds) and repeatedly interrupted during sleep. For some people, the combination of disturbed sleep and oxygen starvation can lead to hypertension, heart disease and mood and memory problems. It also increases the risk of car crashes and can be life-threatening. While dangerous, more than 18 million Americans have the disorder, so if you think you might be one of them, have a talk with your doctor.

I hope other health insurance companies will start to recognize the importance of a sleep apnea diagnosis and add these important studies to their coverage plans.
