My Strange Sleep Phenomenon

by Nod on 07/06/2010

This past week I’ve been really tired and have no idea why.  I figured I’d share my experience and see if anyone had any ideas. Basically, I’m exhausted by the time I go to bed (regardless of the time) and feel like I’ve been run over by a truck in the morning. Throughout the day, waves of heavy sleepiness come over me and it’s all I can do to stay awake. I have to get moving or else I’m practically asleep for the day. I’m not on any medications except birth control and haven’t been eating or drinking differently. I sleep through the night without waking, so I don’t think it has anything to do with quality of sleep. Even when I have caffeine it doesn’t seem to work or delay my exhaustion for more than an hour.

I’ve started a new job that’s pretty active and sometimes stressful. I thought this might be it, except that I didn’t have these tired spells until two weeks in. Now I get them every day. I knew my body would need to adjust from my somewhat sedentary lifestyle (except for scheduled workouts) to an active job. Does it make sense that I would be more tired in the second week than the first? Even if my body is adjusting to a new job, wouldn’t simply making sure I’m getting enough sleep at night be enough? Why the exhaustion throughout the day?

Let me know if you have any suggestions and if I come up with anything I’ll be sure to post them in case anyone else is having the same sleep phenomenon.
